Who we are
Kitimat Local is a free online directory of businesses, services and organizations in Kitimat, British Columbia. It is built and run by Spruce Tree Media Ltd., a company based in Kitimat. In this policy, "we" and "us" means Spruce Tree Media Ltd.
We handle personal information in line with British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
What we collect
When you add a business
The Add a Business form asks for details about the business, such as its name, category, description, address, phone number, public email, website, social media links, hours, logo, photos and menu. These details are meant to be shown publicly on the listing once we approve it.
We also ask for your name, your email and how you are connected to the business. This is never shown on the site. We use it to follow up if we have questions about the listing. If you tell us you own or manage the business, we keep your name and email as the owner contact for that listing.
When you report an issue with a listing
The report form collects the type of problem, your description, any photos or files you upload, and your email if you choose to give it. Reports are emailed to us so we can check and fix the listing.
When you contact us
The contact form collects your name, email, the topic you pick and your message, so we can reply.
Collected automatically
When you send any of our forms, the form system records your IP address and the date and time of the submission to help us spot spam and abuse. Like most websites, our web server also keeps standard technical logs, such as IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested, which are used for security and to keep the site running properly.
We do not use advertising trackers or analytics tools on the site at this time. If that changes, we will update this policy first.
How we use it

- To review new listings and reports before anything changes on the site
- To reply to your messages and questions
- To protect the site from spam, misuse and security problems
We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not use it for anything unrelated to running Kitimat Local without asking you first.
Information shown publicly
Anything entered as business information, including photos, logos and menus, may appear on the public listing and can be seen by anyone. Please don't include personal details in those fields that you don't want published. Anyone can ask us to correct or remove a listing using the Report an issue link on the listing or our contact page.
Cookies and your browser
Visitors who browse the site are not tracked with cookies. The Add a Business form saves your answers in your own browser as you move between steps, so you don't lose your progress if you leave the page. That information stays on your device until the form is sent or your browser data is cleared.
Outside services
Some parts of the site load from other companies' servers, which means they receive your IP address and basic browser information when you view those pages:
- Google Fonts, for the lettering used on the site
- unpkg, a content delivery network that serves the site's icons
- OpenStreetMap, for the maps on business listings
Links to Google Maps for directions, and to business websites and social media pages, take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies. The site is hosted by a third-party hosting provider, and form submissions and emails pass through our hosting and email services. Some of these providers may store or process information outside Canada, where it may be subject to the laws of that country.
How long we keep it
Business listings stay on the site until they are removed or replaced. Form submissions and emails are kept only as long as we need them to review listings, handle reports and answer questions, and then deleted. You can ask us to delete your information at any time.
Keeping it safe
We use reasonable security measures to protect the information we hold, including secure connections and limited access to the site's administration area. No system is perfectly secure, but we take care to protect what you share with us.
Your choices
You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Just contact us using the details below and we will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
Children
Kitimat Local is a business directory meant for adults. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
